CAT (Common admission test) is conducted by IIM’s (Indian institute of Management) every year and is an online test or also known as CBT – Computer based test. This year it will be conducted on 24th of November and the convener is IIM Kozhikode. Around 2.5 lakh students will compete for 20 IIM’s and other 200+ institutes. This test is said to be the most competitive in nature as it involves aptitude which consists of Reasoning, Maths and English. Following is the actual break up (CAT 2019) of test as per the IIM website.

Section Number of questions Time limit
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension 34 34

Each correct response to the question will fetch 3 marks, each incorrect will fetch (-1) mark and for unattempted there is no penalty.

The IIM’s and few top institutes look for sectional cut off in addition to the overall cut off. This cut offs are based on percentiles. So, after the test is done a student gets the raw score, IIM’s apply normalization method and the raw score is converted into scaled score. Post this the percentile is calculated by considering the marks scored by the topper and the total number of aspirants who appeared for CAT.

The eligibility criteria for CAT is that the student should be final year appearing or completed graduation with 50% and if the candidate belongs to SC, ST or PwD then the minimum requirement is 45% in graduation.
